How Lab Diamonds Are Made

Real Diamonds. Created with Science.

At Orliére, we make diamonds with advanced technology instead of digging them from the ground. The result? A real diamond with the same sparkle, toughness, and chemical makeup as one from the earth — but created in a way that’s far gentler on the planet and easier on your wallet.

How Lab Diamonds Are Grown

We start with a tiny diamond “seed” — a sliver of pure carbon crystal. Then we grow it using one of two proven methods:

  • High Pressure, High Temperature (HPHT): We recreate the intense heat and pressure found deep in the earth’s crust. Under these conditions, carbon atoms bond to the seed and the diamond grows larger.

  • Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD): We place the seed in a chamber filled with a carbon-rich gas. With heat, the gas breaks down and carbon rains down on the seed, building the diamond layer by layer.

In both cases, after a few weeks, you have a real diamond crystal ready for cutting and polishing — virtually indistinguishable from a mined diamond.

The Environmental Advantage

Mining for diamonds is huge in scale. To produce just one carat of mined diamond, some operations move several tons of rock. The biggest open-pit mines can remove tens of millions of tons of earth every year, using vast amounts of water and fuel. This leaves large scars on landscapes and produces significant greenhouse gases.

Lab-grown diamonds skip the giant pits and heavy machinery. Our primary resource is electricity. When we source clean energy, we cut the carbon footprint by up to 90% compared to mining, and we eliminate the need for blasting, hauling, and displacing entire ecosystems.

Quality Without Compromise

Lab-grown diamonds aren’t “synthetic” in the sense of fake — they’re real diamonds, with the exact same crystal structure, hardness, and brilliance. They’re graded by the same independent labs as mined stones for cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Even skilled jewelers need specialized equipment to tell them apart.

The Price Advantage

Because lab-grown diamonds don’t require massive mining operations, they’re far more affordable:

  • Up to 70–80% less: That’s the average difference between lab-grown and mined diamonds of the same quality.

  • Example: A 1-carat lab diamond today often costs $700–$900 loose. Add an Orliére setting starting around $1,000, and many customers create a beautiful ring for $2,000–$3,000 total.

  • Big-brand comparison: Major luxury houses can start above $25,000 for a 1-carat mined diamond ring. That’s a difference of $10,000–$20,000+ for similar sparkle and size.

Why Orliére
