Lab Diamond FAQs
Understanding Lab Grown Diamonds
A lab-grown diamond is a diamond. They are chemically and physically identical to mined-diamonds. The only difference is that we make them in a lab instead of pulling them from the earth. In fact, lab diamonds are so indistinguishable from mined diamonds we are required to inscribe a microscopic stamp on the diamonds girdle for ethical reasons (don't worry you can't see it without specialized equipment). Without this, jewelers can't tell them apart even with magnification.
Yes. They have the same chemical structure (pure carbon), hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), and sparkle as mined diamonds.
Scientists use either HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) or CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) methods to grow diamond crystals atom by atom.
Most diamonds take 6 to 12 weeks to grow to gem quality, compared with millions of years underground.
No. Even trained jewelers need specialized equipment to identify origin.
Yes. Leading labs like GIA and IGI grade cut, color, clarity, and carat using the same standards. We include a grading report with all engagement rings.
Absolutely. They are just as durable as mined diamonds and will last for generations.
- Yes, natural-looking inclusions can occur, and clarity is graded the same way as mined stones.
Quality and Beauty
Yes. Brilliance comes from cut quality, not origin.
Yes. At Orliere every diamond is F color or better (D–F), which is considered colorless.
Yes. Round, oval, emerald, cushion, pear, and many other shapes are available.
Yes. They are grown in many carat sizes, from delicate stones to large center diamonds.
- No. They are real diamonds and will stay bright and beautiful for life.
Impact & Value
Yes. They avoid the large land disturbance, mining waste, and ecosystem damage that come with traditional diamond mining.
Yes. They require far less land and water and don’t create giant open-pit mines.
Yes. Because they’re made in a controlled lab, there’s no link to conflict zones.
Typically 70–80% less for the same size and quality.
Typically 70–80% less for the same size and quality.
Absolutely not. Lower price comes from a shorter, more efficient production process—not from weaker materials.
Yes. They can be insured and appraised just like mined diamonds.
Yes. Lab-grown diamonds can be set, resized, and repaired exactly like mined diamonds.
